The ultrasound is a simple exam, quick, non invasive and without radiation.  Ultrasounds are used to create an image.

The ultrasound is indicated in the following investigations.
Abdomen – Pelvis (endo-vaginal) – Fœtal – Breasts – Thyroïd – Testicles
Musculo-skeletal, (joints infiltration  – calcium wash-out – cyst puncture), Prostate (biopsy) – Heart.

The doppler allows a more specific study of the cardiovascular circulation.  It is indicated for the following investigations:
Heart – Carotids – Arteries and veins of the limbs – Renal and digestive arteries.

Preparation : Exam requiring a preparation
Abdominal and renal ultrasound
Arterial, renal or digestive doppler
Fasting: avoid eating, drinking or smoking for at least 5 hours before the examination.
Obstetrical (fœtal) ultrasound
Pelvic trans-vesical ultrasound
Drink 700 ml (3 big glasses) of liquid 1h30 before the time of the appointment. Do not urinate before the exam.
Pelvic endo-vaginal ultrasound

Drink 1 glass of water 1h30 before the time of the appointment and do not urinate before the exam.

Prostatic trans-rectal ultrasound Buy a FLEET enema and administer one hour before the exam.
Prostatic trans-rectal biopsy (bring the result of PSA : a biopsy is generally done if the PSA is 4 or more) Buy a FLEET enema and administer one hour before the exam.                                                                                            

With a doctor’s prescription, buy 3 tablets of Cipro XL 1000 mg : take one the night before the exam, one on the day of the exam and one the day after the exam.

Stop all anti-coagulant medicine one week before the exam (AINS, Coumadin, Entrophen, Novasen, Aspirin, Plavix, Ticlid).
